Mangaluru ranked 3rd cleanest city in India

Mangaluru is ranked third cleanest city in the country after Mysuru and Greater Mumbai.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Tuesday, Mayor Harinath said Mangaluru with a score of 64.74 points (out of 100 points) has been ranked third in the sanitation rating conducted during 2013-15.

In line with the National Urban Sanitation Policy of 2008, the sanitation performance of 476 cities has been measured on 19 indicators for this ranking.

Mysuru secured the first rank with 65.09 points and Greater Mumbai secured second rank with 64.91 points, he said. The 19 indicators were broadly classified into output-related, process-related and outcome-related indicators.

Of the 50 points for output-related indicators, Mangaluru secured 34.38 points. With regard to process-related indicators, the city secured 24.41 points out of 30 points. However, Mangaluru secured 5.95 points out of 20 points in the outcome-related indicators.

Based on the second sanitation rating survey, the city has been asked to address some of the issues. The issues included improvement in the quality of drinking water, and prevention of pollution of water bodies. The survey has also suggested improvement in recycle and re-use of treated sewage for non-potable applications.

Mangaluru City Corporation received an e-mail on the ranking from the Union Urban Development Ministry on Tuesday, he said. HN Gopalakrishna, Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation, was present on the occasion.
