Mangaluru to host rain festival on June 14

Display of agri machineries, organic food fair and display and sale of plants of native varieties will be part of the rain festival to be held at Pilikula in Mangaluru on June 14.

Participating at a meeting to discuss the outline of the festival in Mangaluru on Tuesday, Prabhakar Sharma, Executive Director of Dr Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama Society, said that the society has planned a rain festival keeping the culture and heritage of the region in mind.

Stating that rain is closely associated with farming sector, he said there will be a display and sale of agri machineries at the festival. In addition to this, there will be a display of vermi-compost technology. Pilikula Nisargadhama -- which houses a biological park, arboretum and science centre among others – has a plot to produce vermi-compost.

Organic vegetables and fruits will be on display and for sale.

The Department of Forests will conduct an exhibition of plants of native varieties in the region. Stating that the recent Vasanthotsava (spring festival) attracted a good number of visitors, he said there was a good demand for various native varieties of plants in that exhibition. There will also be sale of the saplings on the occasion, Sharma said.

Various plant species native to western ghat region will be planted in Pilikula as part of the rain festival on June 14.
