A day ahead of the last working day of the second lap of the Budget session, the Opposition alleged that the Centre not just lied to the people on disruptions, but also orchestrated ruckus to ensure the House does not take issues such as corruption and communal riots in the country.

On Thursday, too, both the Houses adjourned without taking up any business.

In Rajya Sabha, the Centre’s efforts to get the Prevention of Corruption Bill passed were defeated by a united Opposition on Thursday.

They said no Bill can be passed without discussion and said the Centre is running away from debates on PNB scam and other corruption issues.

In the Lok Sabha, the AIADMK members were on the well of the House and the no-confidence motion could not be taken up for discussion on Thursday, too.

“We are ready for discussion. Kindly allow us to move the no-confidence motion to discuss various issues,” said leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the Centre was ready for a debate but the Congress and some of its leaders were against the debate. Congress members, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, countered the Minister’s remarks.

Earlier, the Opposition parties protested near the Gandhi statue outside Parliament over issues such as disruption of proceedings and Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

Sonia Gandhi told a news channel that Ananth Kumar made false statements in the House.

‘Shameful’

“I think it’s shameful that the Parliamentary Affairs minister can speak such lies on the floor of the house,” she said. “Congress has always been sitting patiently and requesting a discussion. It’s the government and its allies that have not been allowing Parliament to function,” she added. The Speaker expunged the names mentioned by the Minister.

Senior RSP leader NK Premachandran told BusinessLine that the way House was not allowed to function by the Centre was unprecedented in history.

“The entire drama was orchestrated by the BJP. The government used the AIADMK to disrupt the House. This is unprecedented,” he said.
