All the Opposition parties are likely to move a privilege motion against HRD Minister Smriti Irani for her alleged “misleading remarks” on the incidents that followed the suicide of Hyderabad University research scholar Rohith Vemula.

Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula, brother Raja and Rohith’s friends met leaders of various political parties here on Saturday and told them about the “incorrect statements” made by Irani in both the Houses earlier this week. Radhika Vemula had said on Friday that Irani’s statement was a bunch of lies.

Congress leader Mukul Wasnik said his party will move a privilege motion in Parliament. “The Union Minister has not only been economical with the truth but has also wilfully misled Parliament on the unfortunate suicide of a young Dalit student,” he added.

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told BusinessLine that his party will approach the Speaker of Lok Sabha for breach of privilege of members. Yechury had raised several issues against Irani in Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Other than Yechury and CPI leaders Sudhakar Reddy and D Raja, Vemula’s relatives and friends also met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and JD(U) leader KC Tyagi. She had met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal the other day. BSP supremo Mayawati will also meet them on Sunday.
