Rahul Gandhi became the first Congress chief to contest the Lok Sabha election from Kerala when he filed his nomination for the Wayanad seat on Thursday in the company of sister Priyanka Gandhi and other party leaders.

But the highlight of the day was the roadshow he undertook in an open vehicle, with tens of thousands of people lined up on the roads of the congested town.

Rahul was strictly told not to travel in an open vehicle, given Wayanad’s tryst with Maoist violence. But he overruled the SPG, saying he could not afford to disappoint the massive crowd waiting for him since early in the morning. Supporters had come in from neighbouring districts as well as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
