Soni appointed DG, Bureau of Indian Standards

Sunil Soni, a 1981 batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre, has been appointed as Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Soni is at present on compulsory wait in the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.

The vacancy was necessitated following superannuation of Sharad Gupta, a 1977 batch IAS officer of Assam cadre.

BIS, a body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, is into formulation of standards for all segments of industry and business.

It also certifies products, popularly known as ISI mark, certification of imported products and hallmarking of jewellery.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has appointed Tapan Ray, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, as Additional Secretary in Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

Ray is at present working in his state cadre — Gujarat.
