N. Srinivasan was unanimously re-elected President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for 2013-14 at the Annual General Meeting here today.
However, he cannot take charge till further orders from the Supreme Court which is hearing a petition from the Cricket Association of Bihar seeking to restrain Srinivasan from contesting the elections. The Court said in the order last week the BCCI can conduct the elections as scheduled and Srinivasan can contest. But, in case he is elected, he cannot take charge until further orders.
Srinivasan was the lone candidate for the presidential post, and his name was proposed by the South Zone. He has completed two years as BCCI President and has been re-elected for an additional year.
He was elected in the backdrop of the ongoing controversy surrounding his son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, being charge-sheeted by the Mumbai Police for betting and spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League. Srinivasan, is the Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements which owns CSK, an IPL franchise.
The usually clean-shaven Srinivasan was sporting a stubble and came to the Park Sheraton Hotel, the venue at 9.30 a.m. The meeting, which started at 11 a.m., lasted for about an hour. He left just after 4 p.m.
Srinvasan did not speak to the large team of media persons waiting outside the venue since 8 a.m.
Congress leader and Union Minister Rajiv Shukla, who was elected as Vice-President (central zone), told reporters that due to the Supreme Court’s directive, Srinivasan will not assume charge as president immediately. However, the other office-bearers elected today will assume charge.
Today's meeting will not be a contempt of Court, which has said the BCCI can hold the AGM and conduct elections. As per the BCCI’s rule, an elected President only can conduct the AGM and Srinivasan is the elected President. “We will wait for Supreme Court's direction tomorrow,” he said.
Shukla said a new committee has been formed under his chairmanship to finalise the West Indies tour. The committee will meet on October 3 to finalise the dates and venues.
