Telangana, a ‘political gimmick’, says BJP

The Congress party’s resolution on Telangana is a “political gimmick”, said Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP’s national spokesperson and senior Supreme Court advocate on Saturday.

“It is a political gimmick. We feel the decision has been made more keeping in political interest,” Lekhi told reporters here on the sidelines of a panel discussion on ‘Nation Building and Lessons to Learn from Democracy’ organised by ACAE Chartered Accountants’ Study Circle.

The process of creating a separate State would have multiple challenges relating to governance and administration, she said.

“It cannot be created by merely announcing it in a press conference. That is why we believe there is too much gap between promising Telangana and it becoming a reality,” she added

Stating that the BJP was in favour of smaller states, Lekhi said the state reorganisation committee should look into the details of the demands for separate states that have cropped up across the country, following the Centre’s go-ahead for Telangana.

“Seven of the districts of Telangana are (termed) backward due to the bad governance over the years. A smaller state ensures better flow of administration,” Lekhi pointed out.
