An all-party meeting in Tamil Nadu will be held in Chennai on March 5 to discuss the impact of the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies in the State.

The delimitation exercise is a sword hanging over the head of Southern states, said Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Talking to newspersons after chairing a Cabinet Meeting on Tuesday, Stalin said. 40 registered political parties have been invited to the meeting. The issue is a major struggle for the southern States, he added.

Tamil Nadu will be among the States that will be badly affected by the delimitation. At present, there are 39 constituencies. However after the delimitation in 2026, the number of MPs will reduce to 31. It is not just a reduction in numbers but the State’s rights. “Our voice is being suppressed in the name of delimitation,” he said, urging all the political parties to raise their voice on the issue.

Stalin said that Tamil Nadu was one of the States that followed the family planning programme properly. This has led to a situation where the State will have lesser population numbers and in turn fewer Lok Sabha seats after the delimitation.

In February 2024, the DMK adopted a resolution against the proposed delimitation, arguing that States that have best controlled population levels ought not to be penalised.
