7-magnitude earthquake hits northern Japan

A magnitude-7 earthquake struck northern Japan today, the Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. The agency did not issue a tsunami warning.

The epicentre of the 12:06 pm (0306 GMT) quake was off the east coast of the northern island of Hokkaido, at a depth of 10 kilometres, the agency said.
