News International, which belongs to billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, on Wednesday changed its name to News UK after several years of scandal.
A News International-owned newspaper, News of the World, was closed in 2011 after revelations that it had illegally hacked the phones of celebrities, politicians and crime victims.
Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks is among those who have been charged in connection with the scandal.
“The change follows the fundamental changes of governance and personnel that have taken place to address the problems of the recent past,” said the company, which owns The Sun, Britain’s most popular newspaper, and The Times.
The rebranding was “designed to convey a more coherent and logical identity for the new parent company across the globe,” it said.
The news came days before the publishing side of Murdoch’s empire was due to be separated from the entertainment side.
News Corp, to which News UK belongs, is to be listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange on Friday.
The entertainment arm, including film and television assets, would be listed separately as 21st Century Fox.
