Pakistan has said it will nominate US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for his “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, per a statement posted on social media.
US President Donald Trump, in a separate post, noted with regret that he won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the war between India and Pakistan, nor for keeping peace in other regions. But, he said, the people knew it and that’s what mattered.
Islamabad is ready to nominate Trump for the coveted prize despite New Delhi’s assertion that there was no third party mediation and the discussions on the cessation of military activities took place between India and Pakistan alone at the latter’s insistence.
“President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi, which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation,” Pakistan said in a statement posted on X. “This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker,” it added.
Trump and his aides asserted multiple times that during Operation Sindoor, carried out by India last month targeting Pak terror infrastructure, the US had helped put a stop to escalation in military tensions.
On May 10, it was Trump who first announced a “ceasefire” between the two countries, which was later confirmed by India and Pakistan.
India, however, consistently refuted the claim of a US mediation.
In fact, earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clarified to Trump in a telephonic conversation that trade was never discussed in connection with Operation Sindoor and there was no US mediation between India and Pakistan.
But the very next day, Trump repeated his claim of having stopped the war between India and Pakistan and has now indicated that he deserved recognition for it.
“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the war between India and Pakistan,” Trump posted seeking credit for many other peace initiatives including between Congo and Rwanda, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. “No, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do, including Russia/Ukraine, and Israel/Iran, whatever those outcomes may be, but the people know, and that’s all that matters to me!,” Trump said.
