Raising questions
This refers to the edit “Unedifying spectacle’” (April 21). It justly notes with dismay about the undue delay in clearing state Bills by Tamil Nadu Governor and the manner the Supreme Court decided the complaint against him. Some questions arise.
Should the aberration on the part of three or four governors invoke a new restriction, beyond the Constitution, applicable to all 28 governors?
What was the urgency to bind the President with the same condition without giving her an opportunity to argue?
Should a two-member bench decide such an important imposition on the powers of the Constitutional head of the nation?
Would it not have been better if the court had asked the government to fix the time-limit for governors and if required the President, after due deliberation in Parliament and thus avoid entering executive domain?
And morally speaking, should not the Apex court fix time limits in its decision-making areas?

Realistic analysis
The article ‘The geopolitics of Trump tariffs’ (April 21), says it all bluntly, tersely and honestly. In the post US tariff scenario, US still has several allies while China, worst affected by the US tariffs, has only a few. China’s vulnerabilities are several. Besides its food shortage, its oversized manufacturing capacity now faces threats. Its failing realty sector and banking crises besides debts have dented its economic prospects in the long term. China has border issues with all its neighbours with no solution in sight. The US knows China’s vulnerabilities very well and is in a position to contain and dent Chinese growth. But all said and done, China is responsible for the grave crisis it has landed itself.

Apropos ‘The geopolitics of Trump Tariffs’ (April 21). Trump tariffs will have a major impact on Chinese exports, jobs and will affect Chinese manufacturing sector. The hidden reasons are Trump’s dissatisfaction on China on several issues like Chinese unfair trade practices, Hong Kong and Taiwan issues, indifferent handling of Covid-19 pandemic by China, undue domination of China on South China sea, all irked Trump. Hence Trump has imposed tariffs and China has retaliated. This is a war which will be fought over a long period of time.
