Trade imbalance

This refers to the editorial, ‘Mind the gap’ (December 19). Already India’s trade imbalance with most countries, especially China, is a cause of worry. In spite of having a strong scientific community, India imports more than 70 per cent of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients from China. Switzerland deciding to withdraw Most Favoured Nation status offered to India, and the threat of Trump’s tariff war against BRICS nations could add to India’s woes.

India’s export-import policy is confusing and directionless. Duty reduction on gold imports and imposing GST on essentials and medicines are ill-thought-out decisions. A review of this is called for.

PF money via ATM

This has reference to ‘Taking PF money via ATM’ (December 19). It’s definitely an advantage for depositors if withdrawal of PF is permitted through ATMs. On the other hand, it’s not merely the cash withdrawal that is relevant but the related risks. The computation of PF and other claims has to be pre-verified before being routed through ATM, to avoid disputes. Further, mere nomination for the account may not bestow full legal rights as the succession plan is more relevant. Hence allowing withdrawal of PF and other dues through ATMs needs careful examination.

Taxing tobacco products

Apropos ‘Tax on tobacco products should remain high’ (December 19), the upcoming GST Council Meeting must hike GST on tobacco products that benefit from the withdrawal of compensation cess. The government has the onus to discourage tobacco consumption to ensure public health and save lives. The tax rate of several countries on tobacco products is high and India must likewise hike the rate. Raising the tax on tobacco products will not only add to the tax kitty but will also reduce tobacco consumption.

Highlight harmful effects

It is important to discourage people from consuming tobacco. High taxation on tobacco products will help reduce their consumption. Although many livelihoods are dependent on tobacco cultivation, this is no reason to encourage its cultivation. Farmers engaged in tobacco cultivation should be encouraged to grow other crops.

Educating people on the harmful effects of tobacco is a more effective way to curb its consumption than imposing stringent measures. The tobacco lobbies should also be advised not to play with the health of the people.

Ease co-pay conditions

Apropos ‘Cheaper insurance on cards with GoM mooting GST exemption, cuts’ (December 19). While this is a welcome move, IRDAI must go the extra mile in easing co-pay conditions along with simplifying claim settlement procedures to instil confidence among the insured. Also, insurers must be mandated to offer payment of premium in convenient EMIs.
