For something that costs so little, these earphones have a lot to offer

It’s interesting how pretty impressive sound quality and design are coming to headsets that are relatively inexpensive. I was all set to dismiss the boAt Nirvanaa Tres Triple Drivers Earphones as yet another cheap set of earphones with nothing to write home about and a name too long for their own good. But when I spent a good amount of time listening to them, running them through many different genres of music, I was left fairly amazed at the experience.

Focus on clarity

If all you want is some punchy bass and a bit of music to go with it, these in-ear earphones are definitely not for you. If you place a priority on realism and clarity, they are. These earphones are very sensitive to the quality of the music itself. They don’t really make a badly recorded piece of music sound any good, but they do make a good quality recording come into its own.

For what they cost, the BoAt Nirvanaa earphones offer a sound that is surprisingly rich and detailed. I particularly liked the way they brought out separate instruments and voices and made familiar music sound different, prompting me to appreciate sounds I hadn’t noticed consciously before. There’s no deep emphasised bass and that is really a good thing - you don’t want in-ear earphones which also pulse out booming bass at your eardrums. The sound also seems to come not from one ear or the other but from inside your head. If you listen to music in which there is plenty of finesse and detail, this is a good pair to go for at a budget. If you’re into the boom-boom kind of music, it may not suit your needs which would call instead for over-the-ear headphones with an emphasis on bass.

Cuts out the noise

These earphones fit deep and very comfortably in your ear canal and hence end up doing a good job of noise isolation. I managed to cut the sound of my neighbour’s grindingly noisy ceiling fan, noise on the street and other sounds that were stressing me out.

Great fit

But caution is advised with listening too long on in-ear earphones which won’t do one’s hearing much good if you fall for the temptation to listen at a loud clip - I often can’t help that with favourite pieces of music. The isolation also, of course, helps someone sitting next to you on a flight and who will be grateful not to be disturbed by steady tin drum sounds coming from your ears.

Being this cheap, you would expect a shoddy make-do design, but this isn’t the case. The earbuds, which come with extra tips, are very comfortable and have a great fit that makes them tempting to use for hours. There’s a long tangle-free wire - these are not Bluetooth - and red on black accents on both earbuds and wire, making the earphones look quite stylish. There is even a little cloth pouch to carry this set in. It’s rather nice not to have to bother with charging the device and wondering when it will run out or be hampered by walls and so on.

Price : ₹2,999

Pros : Good clear, rich, detailed sound, comfortable fit, some noise isolation, well designed, great price

Cons : Nothing in particular for the price
