Scouting for opportunities in 7 countries, says MD

Mr Anil Sardana

Tata Power plans to diversify into geo-thermal energy and set up power projects outside India. The company’s Managing Director, Mr Anil Sardana, spoke to Business Line on the company’s plans . Excerpts:

On capacity addition

We will continue to explore new power generating capacity to touch 26,000 MW by 2020, with 20-25 per cent coming from clean energy sources.

At the same time, we are targeting to tie-up 50 million tonnes a year of coal resources for fuel securitisation.

On international opportunities

We are working towards setting up power plants abroad. The company has prioritised seven countries. These include South Africa and other Sub-Saharan Africa countries, Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey and West Asia. The company is in the process of deploying resources in these places to understand the market dynamics and scout for opportunities. Tata Power, along with Norway’s SN Power, has a partnership to develop hydropower projects and is currently developing 600-MW Tamakoshi-3 in Nepal.

On Bhutan plans

Given the geological conditions, the project is facing some delay but all efforts are being made to commission the unit by next year. All statutory clearances such as land, water and environment have been received and Power Purchase Agreement for the entire quantum of power has been signed. Infrastructure activities such as approach road, bridges and construction power, among others have been completed. Tata Power is implementing the 114-MW Dagachhu Hydro Project with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Company.

On geothermal project

Tata Power is pursuing an investment of $50 million for 10 per cent stake in Australia’s Geodynamics. Recently, Tata Power along with another Australian company, Origin Energy, won the bid for a 240-MW geothermal project in Indonesia. We are working towards setting up additional power projects in Africa and Indonesia.

On retail distribution

We are aiming to further expand our network in Mumbai. It has crossed the 2.6-lakh consumer mark. Our Delhi subsidiary Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd is continuing to perform well. We would be looking forward to distribution opportunities in other States as well.
