Banking, IT drop nearly 1%

Closing Bell

The BSE Sensex ended 241 points lower and the NSE Nifty dropped by 58 points amid renewed selling by institutions and domestic investors. Investors turned cautious ahead of IIP and inflation numbers amidst report that Indiabulls Asset Management and DHFL Pramerica Mutual Fund saw their assets plunge by more than half in the December quarter, which  indicated fears of India's non-bank finance companies still linger.

Earlier, markets opened flat and moved sideways for most part of the trading session. However, fresh bout of selling brought the indices sharply lower in the last one-hour trading session

The BSE benchmark Sensex closed at 36,153.62, lower by 241.41 points from yesterday's close.

The NSE Nifty fell 57.40 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 10,831.40.

Sectoral indices led by PSU, banking, power, oil and gas, auto, capital goods, realty and consumer durables stocks slipped into the negative terrain, falling by up to 1.60 per cent.

Top laggards include Hero MotoCorp, HDFC, SBI, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finance, ONGC, ITC, Maruti Suzuki and Hindustan UniLver falling between 0.50 percent and 3 per cent.

Rupee gains 6 paise against dollar in opening trade

The Rupee strengthened by six paise at 71.12 against the dollar in opening trade Tuesday, maintaining its upward trend for the sixth straight day on continued selling of the United States (US) currency by exporters and banks.

Besides, optimism ahead of index of industrial production (IIP) numbers for December and retail inflation for January, and the dollar weakening against some other currencies overseas, also supported the rupee, forex dealers said.
