Incoming Premier Narendra Modi pledged to usher in good governance while appealing to Indians to contribute to nation building.
“We were not fortunate enough to die in the struggle for our country’s independence. But we will live and work for the good governance of our country, this is our (government’s) pledge,” Modi said in a victory rally in his constituency of Vadodara in western Gujarat.
“If everyone of the 1.25 billion Indians takes one step, then my nation will move ahead by 1.25 billion steps. This is the power of people, it will forge a new destiny for India,” the Hindu nationalist politician told thousands in the cheering crowds.
His government’s aim would be to take everyone along. “With the participation and support of all, development for all, this is our motto,” Modi said calling himself India’s “worker number 1.” Vote counts showed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party had obtained an absolute majority in the Indian parliament, the first time a party other than the Indian National Congress has done so since independence.
