The Hyderabad unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd is set to commercially launch a solar power-driven steam turbine for the solar energy sector.
This product is essentially a 50-MW steam turbine, with the steam generated through solar power. “This can be useful for concentrated solar power plants. We are in talks with several solar power operators. We are confident of securing a few orders for the product this fiscal,” N. Ravi Chander, Executive Director of BHEL’s Hyderabad unit.
The company is also ready to go to the market with large capacity compressors that could be used by the fertiliser industry to save on its production costs. “These are part of our efforts to explore new products and markets,” he said.
The firm’s new created division, Project Engineering and Systems Division (PESD), has also been approached by a solar power operator to provide engineering consultancy services for a 5-MW hybrid solar station and integrating it with the existing 2x100 MW combined cycle project in Gujarat.
“This will give us a foothold in the emerging concentrated solar power market and work as a consultant,” said Arvind Gupta, Executive Director of PESD.
The Hyderabad unit will be completing its capacity expansion up to 20,000 MW this fiscal. “We have little more work to do to reach this capacity,” Chander said, adding that it will spend Rs 148 crore on the remaining works this fiscal.
The unit notched up a turnover of Rs 6,490 crore and profit before tax of Rs 1,525 crore last fiscal, against Rs 7,004 crore and Rs 1,605 crore, respectively. The drop in the turnover was due to the transfer of some business to the newly created Project Engineering & Systems Division.
Order book position
Chander said the constraints faced by the Indian power sector had hampered offtake of many major power projects, which severely dented the order book of BHEL.
“Our current order book position is Rs 11,000 crore and we hope to receive orders worth Rs 6,500 crore this fiscal,” he said.
