L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd has awarded steel rail supply contract to Tata Corus.
The supply deal estimated to be worth about Rs 180 crore will be deployed in the Rs 16,000-crore elevated metro rail project spanning 72 km. The project seeks to decongest three busy corridors in the city.
The first consignment is heading to an Indian port later this month and will be moved to Hyderabad metro yards next month.
Two other contracts for automatic fare collection and lifts and elevators are expected to be finalised shortly. Some of the best known companies from across the globe are in fray for both these contracts.
According to L&T, Tata Corus was chosen for its ability to provide quality rails and its metallurgical capabilities. The French unit of Tata Corus will supply the rails for the project, according to L&T Hyderabad Metro Chief Executive V.B. Gadgil.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy said that the work on the project had gathered momentum and efforts are to make this as one of the most aesthetically beautiful projects.
Gadgil said this is the biggest public private partnership project taken up in urban area in the world and it is being keenly watched from across the world. The Hyderabad metro project has been chosen among three mega projects to watch out by a leading American firm.
Referring to the recent debate regarding creation of separate statehood of Telangana, Reddy said the project will benefit people irrespective of the outcome.
