Ford India today reported a nine per cent increase in its sales for August 2011, at 8,914 units.

The company had sold 8,172 units in the same month last year, Ford India said in a statement.

The sales were mainly on the back of new vehicle all-new Ford Fiesta and continued strong demand for the Ford Figo.

"Despite increasing competition and slower industry growth rates, consumers continue to choose the innovative, fuel-efficient, cost-effective vehicles Ford India offers," the Ford India President and Managing, Director, Mr Michael Boneham, said in a statement.

The all-New Fiesta went on sale last month and is the first of eight new vehicles that Ford is bringing to India.

Ford Figo continued to see a surge in demand as Ford India exported more than 1,500 cars this month, now exporting to 26 markets, Mr Boneham said and added that the company would eventually export the compact car to close to 50 international markets.

"It is gratifying to see our Chennai-built Figo achieve sales beyond the 100,000 units sold here in India, as well as great results from export markets as well," he added.

Ford had recently announced to invest Rs 4,000 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility in Gujarat.
