Gamesa Wind Turbines Pvt Ltd has received a €11-million loan from the IFC to build a wind turbine assembly. This is IFC's first investment for wind turbine manufacture in India.
According to an IFC announcement, the World Bank Group institution is providing the loan to support Gamesa's plans to scale up its wind turbine assembly capacity in India over the next two years.
Wind research
The manufacturing facility is in Chennai and has a capacity of 200 MW a year. Gamesa plans to expand it to over 800 MW in the next two years through the new wind turbine assembly unit. Gamesa is also involved in research on developing wind farm sites in the region and has signed contracts in India and Sri Lanka for the installation of more than 60 MW.
“We are committed to supporting energy generation from renewable sources to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions,” said Mr Sergio Pimenta, IFC Director for Manufacturing in Asia.
Gamesa, a subsidiary of Spain-based Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica S.A., is a global leader in wind-energy technology. The company has more than 15 years of experience and 21,000 MW installed in 30 countries, with production facilities in China, India, Europe, and the US.
It designs, manufactures, and installs wind turbines, as well as manages operation and maintenance services for close to 14,000 MW . Gamesa also develops, constructs, and sells wind farms.
