The International Cricket Council (ICC) will monitor mobile networks and the Internet in a bid to prevent piracy during World Cup 2011. ESPN Star Sports has bagged the rights to stream matches live on its Web site and any other site providing live or recorded footage from the event is considered an act of piracy, according to Mr Nandan Kamath, legal counsel to Copyright Integrity International, the ICC-appointed firm to protect the IP rights of the World Cup.
A 24-hour monitoring team will crawl the Web to check for any violation and send legal notices to violators immediately. The firm will also be tracking mobile networks (of operators, resellers and companies) in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh so that no individual or company commercialises through unauthorised sale of live scores, mobile applications etc. Reliance Communications is the official mobile partner of the World Cup with exclusive rights to use the World Cup logo and trademarks on a mobile application.
