Sales from Indian exporters on eBay grew 85 per cent year on year, in value term. For the e-commerce marketplace, India was the second fastest growing country in the Asia-Pacific region, behind South Korea.
Sharing figures from its Asian Exporters’ Index, a report based on internal eBay data, Mr Kashyap Vadapalli, Director, Categories, eBay India, said that jewellery was the biggest exported item out of India on the site in value terms. Next came handicrafts, which included carpets and rugs.
“Forty four pieces of jewellery sell every hour from India,” he said. The eBay data revealed all kinds of offbeat trading activity – including a trend of nautical instruments being exported from Dehradun.
“While traditional items such as handicrafts and collectibles like Bollywood posters and LP posters showed growth, we noticed that a lot of science instrumentation equipment was getting traded – a new trend,” says Mr Vadapalli.
According to him, buyers from 189 countries bought items from Indian sellers on eBay. Over 7,300 Indian sellers have traded internationally in the last 12 months.
Mr Chandranath Som, Director, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), present on the occasion, said that e-commerce from India was expected to record a growth of 47 per cent and touch $10.3 billion by end of 2011. In 2010, net e-commerce from India was worth around $7 billion.
