Korean technology major Samsung will expand its research and development capabilities in India by hiring between 1,000-2,000 people every year apart from bringing in work involving new technologies.

Samsung currently has four R&D centres in the South West Asian region of which two are located in Noida, one in Bangalore and another one in Dhaka.

Speaking to Business Line , Dr. Dipesh Shah, Director, Samsung India Software Operations, said, “As part of the expansion plan, we will be adding 1,000-2,000 people across the four centres in the region. But more than adding numbers our focus will be to expand technological capabilities and increase customisation of our products.”

Biggest facility

The Bangalore centre with 3,000 engineers is the biggest R&D facility for Samsung outside Korea which is working on mobile phone software and semi-conductors. Samsung also has a lab for third party mobile application developers in the Bangalore campus which enables the developers to test their applications on Samsung devices.

In the Bangalore centre, the company is working on platform development to enable developers make mobile applications across various operating systems such as Android, Bada and Windows 7.

It is also working on developing mobile solutions, for example, a mobile browser called Dolphin has been developed in India. The two units in Noida are working on digital TV products and regional phone development.

“Hiring software engineers in India who have up to 4-5 years experience is very cost effective. But costs involved in hiring those with over 8 years experience is equal to anywhere else in the world. People who deliver that value and are creative get valued,” Mr Shah said.

Samsung is also in talks with Indian telecom players for ‘white labelling' mobile applications. For example, the company has partnered with Tata Teleservices and Apalya to offer Mobile TV services on Samsung Corby devices.

Mobile apps

“We are looking at white labelling our application store for an operator. We have media hub where we have Hollywood movies store with 15,000 titles. We can create a hub with Bollywood titles too. This hub is developed by Samsung but if the operator wants to offer the service under their brand we can do that,” Mr Shah said.

Giving a glimpse into Samsung's roadmap for future technology development, Mr Shah said the R&D centres in India are working on Long Term Evolution Advanced protocols and creating an ecosystem for HTML5 developers.
