Two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto is looking at increasing its total market share in the segment to nearly 23 per cent over the next one year.
It currently has a market share of 17 per cent in the overall two-wheeler segment and competes with the likes of Hero, Honda and TVS.
“We want to increase our total market share in the two-wheeler segment to 23 per cent by the exit of this fiscal,” Eric Vas, President – Motorcycles Business said on the sidelines of the launch of its new “Pulsar” range – ‘AS 200’, AS 150 and ‘RS 200’ here in the city.
According to him, the projected growth also depends on performance of the ‘100 cc’ bike category (also called commuter segment); which has over the last fiscal (FY 2014-15) remained stagnant for the entire industry.
Expansion PlansBajaj, Vas said, also has plans to expand the capacity at its Chakan plant in Maharashtra. The Chakan unit caters to its Pulsar range of bikes.
Apart from Chakan, the company has two more facilities – one each in Panthnagar (Uttarakhand) and Waluj (Maharashtra) – with a combined capacity of 3.25 lakh units per month across all three.
“We are planning to expand the capacity at Chakan, which caters to our Pulsar range. It has a capacity of about 91,000 units a month,” he said, without revealing details of the proposed capacity expansion.
The company, he said, was considering offerings in the 350 to 400 cc category, but did not reveal any time frame for a possible launch.
