Steel Authority of India’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) in Jharkhand has completed its Rs 450 crore revamp of its hot strip mill. The production has already commenced earlier part of this month. Despatches of fresh hot rolled coils also begun from the mill after a gap of two months.
Anutosh Maitra, Chief Executive Officer of BSL told Business Line that currently BSL was producing 6,000 tonnes HR coils a day. “Within a week this would be ramped up to level of 12,000 tonnes a day indicating the end of the restart up period,” he added. BSL produces 2.5 lakh tonnes of HR coils a month.
The steel plant is also expected to complete Rs 75 crore repairs and revamp work cold rolling mill within a month’s time.
Meanwhile, design and engineering work for its upgradation of the existing steel melting shop and sinter plant have begun. “The design and engineering would continue for another six months. Then the erection work would start”, Maitra said.
BSL has taken up Rs 1,100 crore modernisation of steel melting shop (No.1) through installation of a basic oxygen furnace and continuous slab caster for phasing out the energy intensive ingot casting- slabbing mill route. The sinter plant revamp would cost around Rs 800 crore.
These exercises have been taken up to save cost on energy and improve productivity as well as quality of finished products.
