Exide Industries Ltd, the country’s largest lead acid storage battery manufacturer, will focus on the home inverter segment. Following its acquisition of a plant in Roorkee at a cost of Rs 17.5 crore, the company is looking to invest in capacity building in the plant.
Acquired in January this year, the Roorkee plant has a monthly production capacity of 30,000 units. Other then acquisition cost of Rs 17.5 crore, it has also invested another Rs 10 crore on the unit.
According to Mr T. V. Ramanathan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Exide was open to both greenfield (setting up a new plant) as well as brownfield (acquisitions) expansion in the home UPS (inverter) segment.
“We are open to both greenfield and brownfield expansion if the need arises,” Mr Ramanathan told presspersons on the sidelines of the company’s 65th annual general meeting.
The Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Industrial takes care of inverter sales in South and East India, while the SBU Automotive looks after home UPS sales in West and North India.
