Four persons were dead and several others injured in a blast at a coal mine of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd in Peddapalli district, Telangana.
In the gruesome incident, workers in the company’s Open Cast-1 mine in the Ramagundam area died following a blast at about 11 am today, when the explosives went off.
The mining workers were in the process of setting up explosives to remove the overburden (rock/soil overlying a mineral deposit) when the disaster occurred.
According to sources, the incident occurred when the workers, engaged by a contractor, were placing the detonators in 32 holes at a depth of about 4 metres to remove the overburden. While they were working, the explosives went off, killing two of them immediately. Two others died later and several others were injured.
State-owned Singareni Collieries said the workers were engaged by a private contractor.
Early reports suggest that the explosives went off much before they were expected to blast, resulting in the tragedy in the open-cast mine.
Unions stage protests
Local unions staged protests at the Godavarikhani Hospital, where the workers were admitted. They demanded ₹1 crore ex-gratia to the families of the deceased, ₹50 lakh for those injured and employment in the colliery.
Senior officials of the PSU have rushed to the spot.
