The €1.2-billion German renewable energy solutions provider JUWI Group is in parleys with wind turbine manufacturers Suzlon Energy and Kenersys to play a role as an EPC contractor in India while hinting at the possibility of establishing a concrete tower manufacturing unit.

The co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of JUWI Group, Mr Matthias Willenbacher, said: “The company has ongoing engagements with Suzlon through its group companies in Europe and plans to extend this engagement here. We have also had discussions with The Kalyani Group, to work together in setting up wind farms both as an EPC solutions provider and possibly as a developer,” he said.

Speaking to Business Line during his visit to Solarcon India 2011, Mr Willenbacher said the company, which began with two people 15 years ago, now employs over 1,700 people across its 13 global subsidiaries, including in India.

“We work in the renewable energy segments — solar, wind, biomass and hydel power generation globally and expect to engage with Indian developers across these areas,” he said.

He said the company was also open to picking up stake in some existing companies.

JUWI has been associated with installation of about 20 MW of solar photovoltaic power projects in Gujarat and Rajasthan and expects to execute projects with installed capacity of about 80-100 MW within two years. The company has taken the plunge to become a solar power project developer, participating in the ongoing bidding process under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

“The Indian market would see rapid deployment of solar power plants and other renewable energy sources. We are heading towards a situation when there will be grid parity and possibly these would be cheaper than conventional fuel projects. The opportunity is huge, this is just the beginning of a big unfolding opportunity,” he said.

The company expects to ready the Concrete Tower prototype for wind turbines by next year and thereafter set up a manufacturing unit in India. The company’s management is also looking at establishing a facility for racking systems for different applications, he said.
