Hyundai Motor India on Monday launched the Eon car in the Chennai. Priced Rs 2.9 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai), the small car is built on a new platform for the Indian market.
Eon, which was launched in other parts of the country last week, has seen 5,000 bookings so far, said Mr H. W. Park, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer, Hyundai Motor India.
The target is to sell 1.5 lakh units of Eon a year. Exports to South America and South Africa will be considered next year, said Mr Park.
On whether the company, which has a manufacturing plant in Chennai, is looking at any more plants, Mr Park said the existing plant will meet future demand and “when the market matures, a new plant will be considered.”
Production capacity
Hyundai plans to increase production capacity from 6.3 lakh units a year to 6.7 units, in a year, said Mr Park. Ten new models will be launched by 2015, in the above mid-segment, he added.
