Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 2,229 Freelander 2 SUV in China due to a potential perforation in power steering hose that could lead to oil leak and even combustion. The Freelander 2s are imported from the UK.
Tata Motors-owned JLR has also decided to recall a batch of the sport utility vehicles from two other countries, Poland and Turkey.
China is JLR's third biggest market by volume. Official sales began in 2003 for Land Rover, and in 2004, for Jaguar. More than 200 people work in the company's China National Sales Company.
Noting that the recalls were with regard “to a specific model, with a left-hand drive and a particular engine, and affected a small number of cars”', the spokesperson said the recall and consequent “repair would just take one hour in all”'.
The recall in China involves imported Freelander 2, manufactured between September 19, 2011 and April 20, 2012. Any recall would necessitate the dealer undertaking an inspection of the vehicle and fitting a new sleeve to the air-conditioning refrigerant filling nozzle or replacing the power steering hose.
The company has notified its customers about the recall and will replace the related accessories.
An official spokesperson said, “The size of the recall is not big. This would not impact the India operations of JLR”'.
In India, a JLR Freelander is priced at around Rs 39 lakh.
