The III Special Magistrate Court here has adjourned to June 6 its order on the two cheque bounce cases filed against industrialist Vijay Mallya by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), and directed the latter to furnish Mallya’s latest address.
The court had, on May 9, posted the cases for today to announce its order on the quantum of sentence to Mallya, who was convicted in the two cases. Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines had issued the cheques to GHIAL, which operates the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, towards charges for using the facilities at the airport for its flights.
In April, the court had convicted Mallya and others in connection with the bouncing of two cheques of ₹50 lakh each under the Negotiable Instruments Act. However, the quantum of punishment was not announced. With Mallya away from India, the court adjourned the matter to June 6 and wanted warrants issued. GHIAL was asked to provide the correct address of the accused to enable the issue of fresh warrants.
Lawyer G Ashok Reddy, representing GMR, argued in the court that a sentence can be imposed even in the absence of the accused.
Several cases have been filed against Kingfisher Airlines for bounced cheques. These are at various stages.
