With new competitors like Mahindra Marazzo entering the market, country’s largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Wednesday launched next generation Ertiga, which comes with a new engine and better space.

Priced between ₹7.44 lakh and ₹10.90 lakh (ex-showroom), a new K15 petrol engine now powers the new Ertiga with 13 per cent more power and six per cent improved torque output, the company said.

The petrol version of the model with manual transmission (priced ₹7.44 lakh -₹9.50 lakh) comes with a fuel efficiency of 19.34 km/l, while the automatic version (priced ₹9.18 lakh – ₹9.95 lakh) gives fuel efficiency of 18.69 km/l. The diesel options (priced at ₹8.84 lakh – ₹10.90 lakh) would offer a fuel efficiency of 25.47 km/l, MSIL said.

The petrol variants are costlier by up to ₹71,000 and the diesel versions up to ₹20,000, from the outgoing model.

MSIL will not be offering the CNG option as of now, with the new Ertiga, which was offered in the 1.4 litre petrol engine in the earlier generation. The CNG option will be offered with the new K15 engine in near future, company sources said.

The new K15 engine is the progressive smart hybrid technology with a lithium ion battery, which offers better fuel efficiency. The latest offering from Maruti Suzuki is conceptualised on Suzuki’s acclaimed fifth generation Heartect platform. Built afresh, it uses high tensile steel and is compliant for frontal offset impact, side impact and pedestrian protection regulations.

MSIL and suppliers have invested over ₹900 crore towards development of the next gen Ertiga, it said. “The next gen Ertiga has been designed with thoughtful features and great attention to detail, keeping in mind the requirements of our ever evolving customers. The latest avatar successfully combines the revolutionary technology and premiumness that Maruti Suzuki promises to its customers,” Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, MSIL, said.

Launched in April 2012, the Ertiga has clocked cumulative sales of almost 4.2 lakh units till date, the company added.
