The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is all set to lay the foundation stone for the proposed test track at Rohtak in Haryana.

The company has planned an outlay of about Rs 1,700 crore for the project.

Mr I.V. Rao, Managing Executive Officer for Engineering and Head of R&D, Maruti, said initial work at the 600-acre site has commenced and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

The test track forms a critical part of any automotive company enabling it to test its vehicle before securing various certifications. The State Chief Minister is likely to lay the foundation stone on April 23, he said.

The R&D team in India, having about 1,100 people, is playing a vital role in the design and development of cars. About 150 engineers from India are working in Japan at Suzuki centres on various cars under development, he added.
