Haryana's Minister for Labour and Employment, Mr Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, has said he is optimistic that the 18-day deadlock between striking workers (at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant) and the management would be resolved by Friday. The minister has asked the workers to shun the agitation and return to work as the deadlock will only damage the growth and employment generation potential of the region.

“The Maruti Suzuki management should not have suspended and dismissed so many workers. There is no need for the ‘good conduct bond' either because a company runs on trust and confidence shared by all stakeholders. By tomorrow, I am hopeful of ending the impasse,” Mr Sharma told Business Line .

The standoff began on August 29 when the company suspended and dismissed 21 employees on charges of sabotage, and alleged quality issues.

Solidarity

Nearly 7,000 workers at three factories of two different companies of Suzuki in India have been on indefinite strike since Wednesday afternoon to show solidarity with their protesting colleagues at Maruti's Manesar plant.

Workers of Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd located in the Gurgaon-Manesar industrial belt went on strike Wednesday.

Workers from Suzuki Castings — a part of Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd — who are affiliated to Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union have also joined in the strike.

Following the strike at its vendor, Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd, which supplies diesel engines and transmissions to Maruti Suzuki India, there will be no production at MSI's Gurgaon and Manesar plant on Friday, the company said. The next day, Saturday, is a designated holiday on account of Vishwakarma Puja.
