FMCG giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) today said it is reducing the price of its sanitary napkins and baby diapers by up to 15 per cent, as a result of the excise duty cut announced during the recent Union Budget.

The company, which sells sanitary napkins under the brand ‘Whisper' and diapers under ‘Pampers,' said the price change will be effective from today.

“We have announced reduction of our selling price to our customers across specific SKUs with effect from March 16, 2011. We have recommended revised retail prices for Whisper Sanitary Napkins and Pampers Baby Diapers for our consumers,” a Procter & Gamble spokesperson told PTI.

Reduction in excise duty

The company said the price change is consequent to the reduction in the excise duty announced on sanitary napkins and baby diapers from 10 per cent to 5 per cent in the Budget 2011-12.

Another major firm Johnson & Johnson, which sells ‘Stayfree' sanitary napkin, did not reply to queries sent.

New price

P&G, which currently sells ‘Whisper' sanitary napkin priced between Rs 33 and Rs 135 for various packs, will now be available within a price range of Rs 30 and Rs 130 post the revision.

Similarly, the firm's baby diapers will be now available at between Rs 55 and Rs 700, as against the existing price range of Rs 65 and Rs 750.

According a Delhi-based retailer, the price change will take about 10-15 days to come into effect for the final consumers.

“The old inventory which is in the pipeline will have to be exhausted first by distributors and retailers,” the person said.
