Opening up opportunities for aspiring writers in India, Penguin Books India on Thursday launched a new platform, Partridge, in partnership with Author Solutions Inc., for self-publishing in print and e-book format.

“Partridge will provide new opportunities for Indian authors to get published and discovered, both in India and around the world,” Penguin Books said.

In this ‘pay and get published’ model, aspiring writers can choose packages posted on Partridge’s Web site, which includes services such as editing, design and illustration, e-book formatting and online distribution, print formatting, publicity and marketing etc.

Author Solutions, based in Bloomington, Indiana, was acquired by Penguin in July 2012. It is reported to have helped more than 170,000 authors publish more than 200,000 books around the world.

Launching the ‘self-publishing imprint’ here on Thursday, Penguin India’s President and CEO, Andrew Phillips, said “Since Author Solutions joined the Penguin family, we have been focused on their international expansion and India is an obvious starting point, given the active and enthusiastic writing community here.”

Phillips said Penguin would also be monitoring Partridge titles with the hope of picking up authors for the Penguin list.

Author Solutions said through Partridge, Indian authors would have access to a wide range of professional editorial, publishing and marketing services, which would enable them to get their books published and distributed in digital and print formats.

Stating that this was best time in history to be an author, Kevin Weiss, President and CEO of Author Solutions said, “We have been watching this (India) market for some time and see more and more authors looking for publishing and marketing services that meet industry standards but are affordable priced.”

With this partnership, Author Solutions expects to ride on the Penguin brand, which has good recall value among Indian readers.
