Power generation in 1,050 MW Rayalaseema thermal power project located at Muddanur in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh has been affected due to heavy flooding in the region and water inundating some of the facilities at the plant.

All the units of the power plants have been shut down following heavy rains last night, K. Vijayanand, Managing Director of APGenco, said.

Speaking to newspersons here today, he said, “The area around the AP Genco power plant received over 21 cm of rain in a few hours resulting in flooding of the coal storage area and also water pumps. This forced us to shut down all the units as a precautionary measure.”

Earlier, one of the units was off service to take up annual maintenance work and overhaul. But with this shut down, the entire power plant is now off the grid. “We expect to restart power generation after evacuating the water that has flooded the plant site from a local reservoir (Kalamakka vagu). However, the loss is not likely to be big except power generation. It will take couple of days to bring them back to service,” he said.
