The Taj Group on Wednesday inaugurated its 197-room Gateway hotel in the city. The group is launching its second property in the city, after the existing Taj Bengal Hotel, after a gap of 24 years.

The Gateway Kolkata is Taj Group’s 107th property in the country. The Gateway brand is present in 21 cities.

Managed by Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) — a Tata Group hospitality firm - under the Gateway brand, the 197-room hotel is being developed by Jalan Intercontinental Hotels Pvt Ltd.  IHCL and its subsidiaries are collectively branded as Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces.

The company operates in India and abroad through the luxury brand Taj; upper upscale brand Vivanta by Taj; upscale/mid-market hotels and resorts under Gateway brand and in the economy segment through Ginger brand.

According to market sources, the hotel has been developed by Jalan Intercontinental Hotels at an approximate cost of Rs 140 crore (Rs 70 lakh per room) on a 1.9-acre plot off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (along the south-eastern parts of the city).

The hotel will have 6,400 sq. ft. of banqueting space (accommodating 800 people), a roof-top swimming pool and other regular facilities such as Wi-Fi connectivity, food and beverage outlets, apart from the guest rooms, according to the hotel’s Web site.

Initially scheduled to be launched in October, there was a delay in obtaining the required licences and clearances.
