Over the last decade, the Tata Trusts and Tata companies have spend over Rs 8,000 crore on CSR activities while for 2013-14 the figure for Tata companies was Rs 660 crore.

“In the last three years, the group has been trending at an average of Rs 1,000 crore per annum between the trusts and the companies, typically in a 60:40 ratio between the companies and the trusts,” said Mukund Rajan, Member Group Executive Council and Brand Custodian, Tata Sons while addressing a discussion on Sustainability in Tata companies.

This money was spent on a wide range of programmes across areas such as skills development, livelihoods, education, health and nutrition, bio-diversity and disaster relief.

Going forward the group would like to focus on cross-cutting themes across the initiatives being undertaken by the group companies and on key environmental issues of water, carbon and waste.

To co-ordinate these efforts the Tata Sustainability Group has been set up and led by Shankar Venkateswaran. This group will take its strategic direction from a new Global Sustainability Council chaired by Rajan and including the CEOs of a number of Tata companies.

“One of the key focus areas for the Tata Sustainability Group will be a volunteering programme we are putting in place in our group,” added Rajan.
