Tata Motors on Wednesday launched its much-awaited SUV, the Harrier at a starting price of ₹12.69 lakh.

Engineered on Tata Motors’ Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMEGA) Architecture that is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture, t he Harrier is available in four variants — XE (₹12.69 lakh), mid-spec XM (₹13.75 lakh), XT (₹14.95 lakh) and the range-topping XZ (₹16.25 lakh). It will be available in five colours — Calisto Copper, Thermisto Gold, Ariel Silver, Telesto grey and Orcus White. “We opened the bookings for Harrier in October and without revealing all the specifications and pricing, we have been overwhelmed with bookings. At the launch itself, the waiting period is about three months,” Mayank Pareek, President of Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, told reporters at the launch.

Without terming Hexa a failure, Pareekh said the SUV helped Tata Motors understand how to market a premium product, a learning that should help it in selling Harrier.

Both Hexa and Harrier fall in the same price bracket. Over the last nine months, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle business has grown 21 per cent by sales volume, beating the industry average and more than doubling its market share.

“The Harrier is a strong proof point of our Turnaround 2.0 strategy and it will be a game-changer in the market. With the Harrier, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business Unit will continue to win sustainably in the times to come,” said Guenter Butschek, CEO and MD.

The Harrier is powered by Kryotec 2.0 Diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The Kryotec engine delivers 140 PS power and 350 Nm of torque with an Advanced Electronically Controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) for low-end torque and linear power delivery with a low-carbon footprint.

Tata Motors is offering three drive modes — Eco, City, and Sport, which are paired with ESP Terrain Response Modes (Normal, Rough, Wet) to improve handling in different kinds of terrain.

The front and rear suspensions are tuned for Indian conditions. The front suspension and hydra bush have been carried over from the D8 Platform while the rear twist-blade suspension has been specially designed by Lotus Engineering UK.
