The tool-down strike proposed by nearly 65 plants in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt in support of striking workers at Maruti's Manesar plant was postponed after an appeal by Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The strike entered its eleventh day on Tuesday.

“The two-hour strike has been postponed for another 24 hours on the appeal of the Chief Minister and the Labour Commissioner. They sought a day's time to negotiate with the MSI management.

“At present, the tripartite meeting between the management, workers representative and the government is going on. Our next course of action will be decided after the outcome of the meeting,” the AITUC Secretary, Mr D.L. Sachdev, told Business Line .

MSI Managing Executive Officer (Administration), Mr S.Y. Siddiqui, had on Monday ruled out the possibility of a non-affiliated union at the Manesar plant, retracting from his earlier statement.

“It is unfortunate that the company is swinging in its stand and expecting us to be a part of the existing union at the Gurgaon facility,” the newly formed Maruti Suzuki Employees Union's President, Mr Sonu Kumar, told Business Line .

By Tuesday end, Maruti Suzuki is expected to have lost production of 9,800 cars and revenue of almost Rs 340 crore. The company's scrip closed at Rs 1,222.8 on the BSE on Tuesday.
