Wipro Lighting has signed a premium partnership agreement with Belgium-based global lighting solutions firm Schreder to market its smart and connected outdoor lighting products and solutions in India, an emerging business opportunity in the country's ₹Rs 4,000 crore lighting market.

This is Wipro Lighting's fourth partnership.

The ₹100-crore company, which is a part of Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, has collaborated with Cisco for Power on Ethernet (PoE) based lighting solutions and Human-centric lighting solutions.

It also partnered with pure Li-Fi of Scotland to deliver high speed and secure data transmission through LED luminaires and earlier this month partnered with Igor Inc for PoE based lighting solutions.

Bring in products

“Our aim of partnering with Schreder is to bring their patented technology and products like Smart Streetlights, Smart Poles, expertise to empower smart cities in India and address the premium lighting requirements of urban India. This is one more offering on our Internet of Lighting platform which will complement our solutions in the smart and connected outdoor lighting segment,” said Anuj Dhir, Vice-President (C&I) Lighting Business, Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting.

After a joint venture partnership with a Delhi-based company turned sour two years ago, Schreder decided to partner with Wipro Lighting as its vision matched with the company's vision for India.

India is the third largest lighting market after China and the US and presents a huge opportunity for the company’s lighting solutions such as the OWLET IoT control solution for cities that want to be remotely connected to all the lighting points in order to get readings on energy consumption and to enable dimming of lights, said Carl Watson, Chief Regional Officer, AMEA, Schreder SA.

One range for now

Wipro will manufacture one range of street lights in its Aurangabad plant under a licensing agreement with Schreder, while the rest of the company's lighting solutions will be imported. Asked if Schreder is exploring a joint manufacturing agreement with Wipro Lighting, Watson said: “We will see how our partnership goes and will definitely work towards a joint manufacturing agreement with Wipro Lighting.”

India's ambitious programme to develop 100 smart cities as well as the large retrofit projects spearheaded by EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Ltd) and leading domestic firms bode well for Schreder's growth prospects in India, pointed out Karim Boutaour, AMEA Strategic and Marketing Director, Schreder Group.
