Japanese two-wheeler company Yamaha plans to launch entry level scooters in India by 2012.

“We have a number of scooters in other markets like US and Europe and currently, we are studying the Indian market. We will launch entry level scooters here soon,” the Yamaha Motor India director and chief sales officer, Mr Jun Nakata, said.

Another company official said the launch was expected by 2012. Yamaha India would manufacture the scooters at either of its existing facilities at Surajpur and Faridabad.

The company has lined up an investment of $10 million by 2012 for increasing its scooter capacity by one million, the India Yamaha CEO & MD, Mr Hiroyuki Suzuki, said.

With this, the company’s two-wheeler capacity is expected to touch six lakh units per annum from the existing number of five lakh.

He further said the company does not intend to set up new plants but would increase the capacity of its existing units to one million from the current capacity of half-a-million.
