Getting the right employee is a tough task for companies. There are many graduates, but how many are employable with the necessary skills is the oft-asked question by recruiters and human resources managers.

Employment has emerged as a challenge for both the employer and the prospective employees. While employers feel that the cost of recruitment though high is much less than the costs of hiring a wrong candidate, says Mr K.J.A. Swarup, General Manager (HR) of ITC Limited.

Addressing students of CMR college of Engineering and Technology at the Department of Master in Business Administration, organised by The Hindu Business Line Club and sponsored by Tata Docomo photon plus, he stressed the need for students to make the right kind of preparation to get good corporate jobs.

For job seekers, one of the most challenging tasks in decades is cracking an interview and making it big. With expectations of people on both sides of the desk increasing, preparation for an interview has become very important. “A work well begun is well done,” he said.

“Thinking of attending interviews with a feel to land in a dream job makes you elated, but the other side of the coin is landing in disappointment of not being successful in an interview.” The mode of interviewing has considerably changed over time with more emphasis on attitude with technical knowledge as a given.

Explaining the interview aspects, he emphasised said the expectations of the interviewer in asking various questions. He said it is important to look good and feel good, which helps perform well.

‘Be honest'

Given the intense competition for jobs and the high expectations, Mr Swarup explained that only 100 per cent is excellence and anything less than that is only good. He advised the students to be honest and be their natural self during the interview. He also advised the students to express only to express and not to impress.

Summing up, he told the students that zeal, character, appropriate behaviour and subject knowledge were essential to get through an interview. Academic director Dr Satyanarayana, Principal Dr M Ramalinga Reddy, and Head of department Mr A. Kotishwar were present on the occasion.
