The Kerala Government has announced that the monsoon-time ban on trawling off the coast would come into effect on June 15.

This comes on the heels of the official meteorological declaration that the monsoon could hit the Kerala coast on June 1.

The ban would hold until July 31, an official spokesman said here. Monsoon is the time when schools of fish head towards the shore for breeding.

Trawling is not allowed during this time since it could lead to the scooping of the entire fish wealth and disrupt breeding activity.

This could have a direct impact on the livelihood of the entire fishermen community.

District collectors have been told to hold meetings of all stakeholders in the fisheries sector to discuss the modalities of enforcing the ban.

Boats from other States are being directed to leave the Kerala coast before the ban takes effect in another month’s time.

The Centre would be requested to ensure that no foreign vessels venture into the territorial waters during the ban period.

Fish caught until midnight on June 14 can be brought ashore and disposed of through auctions or otherwise until noon the next day, the spokesman clarified. vinson.kurian@thehindu.co.in
