NPCIL submits safety assessment report to DAE

Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has submitted its internal safety assessment report, which was made in the light of the Japan nuclear crisis, to the Department of Atomic Energy.

As part of efforts to revisit the safety of Indian nuclear power plants, four task-forces were set up to assess all aspects of safety in all reactors which are operating as well as under construction and the proposed ones, Financial Director of NPCIL, Mr Jagdeep Ghai, said.

The report was submitted to DAE on Friday, Mr Ghai said.

“It is a highly technical assessment report and we will go through it to find what kind of steps are required to enhance the safety of the nuclear plants in the country, if needed,” Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, Dr Srikumar Banerjee, said yesterday.

“We will come out with a simple report and make it public soon,” Mr Banerjee said.

The task-forces assessed all types of reactors including boiling water reactors (Tarapur units one and two), pressurised heavy water reactors (both indigenous and CANDU types)and light water reactors (under construction at Kudankulam).

The high-level committee set up by the Prime Minister to assess safety regulatory procedures of Indian nuclear plants, headed by former chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Mr S.K. Sharma, will bring out an interim report in July and the final report later.
