Reasonable communicative skills are a must to grab good offers during campus interviews these days, opined experts. There is no short cut to these skills unless one makes a conscious effort and comes up the hard way.

“It is like the eagerness of the King in the story. He could not understand trigonometry and asked the trainer to let him know the easy way of mastering it. The reply he got was that there were no royal roads to trigonometry,” said Prof. P. Ramanujam, Director of the ELT Centre at the Andhra Loyola College.

Delivering The Hindu Business Line Club talk on “Strategies for successful communication” at the Gudlavelleru Engineering College here on Tuesday, Prof. Ramanujam listed out a set of 10 strategies which could help improve his or her skill-sets.

He said, “Make communication pleasant and give a pleasing response rather than a terse answer. This will help build rapport. Speak with a rising intonation to show interest. There should be no brusque, terse and acerbic replies,” he added.

Stating that there were agreeable ways of disagreeing with others, Prof. Ramanujam advised students to focus on the socio-linguistic competencies, avoiding too short and too long-winded answers, listening to recorded discussions, not ending a debate on excuses to avoid collapse of the argument, thinking before talking, understanding the kind of communicative personalities others are and so on.

The College Managing Committee Chairman, Dr Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao, Principal Mr P. Nageswara Reddy, MBA Department HoD, Mr B.E.V.V.N. Murthy and others spoke. The Hindu Regional Manager, Mr V.V. Raja Rao, introduced Prof. Ramanujam to the audience.
