The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology is launching a new research project – green fishing systems for tropical seas – funded by National Fund for Basic, Strategic and Frontier Application Research in Agriculture, ICAR.
The CIFT has undertaken this project to achieve energy efficiency in fishing in collaboration with Goa Shipyard Ltd, Garware Wall Ropes Ltd and DSM India Ltd.
It is for the first time that a project under basic and strategic research in fisheries is being taken up under the PPP mode with a total budgetary outlay of Rs 12.25 crore.
The project will be formally launched by the State Fisheries Minister, K.Babu here on Saturday.
The project aims to achieve twin objective like design and construction of energy efficient new generation combination fishing vessel and development of energy saving selective fishing gear system through material substitution and design optimisation.
T.K. Srinivasa Gopal, director, CIFT, said the outcome of the project is intended to benefit the fishing industry, researchers and policy makers by quantifying and evaluating the characteristic parameter and operational efficiency of the existing fishing craft and gear design against target performance values.
Low drag trawl systems, purse seines with high sinking speed and species specific passive gears are also targeted to be studied in the project, which has duration of four years, he said.
